New Report: Scaling Up Human Resources for Health in Tanzania
A new report by I-TECH details challenges affecting enrollment at 12 pre-service health care training institutions in Tanzania, and outlines strengths and possible areas for further focus. The report, Scaling Up Human Resources for Health, was commissioned by the Tanzania Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I-TECH Supports Implementation Of New South African ART Guidelines
South Africa is in the midst of an important and far reaching change in the country’s approach to HIV care and management. On 1 April 2010, health leaders put new antiretroviral treatment (ART) guidelines into effect, initiating a significant shift in the way HIV testing and treatment are managed by public facilities. I-TECH is supporting clinicians at the forefront of this initiative.
I-TECH Assists School Renovation
What a difference a chair makes . . . and a mattress, a desk, and the dedication of many people! When I-TECH staff first spoke with local collaborators at the Nzega Nurse Training Centre, in Tanzania, they found that the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW) had sufficient funds to renovate the school—but not to replace the badly worn furnishings and supplies. I-TECH agreed to help.
Rapid Training on HIV Care in Mozambique
“And now let’s talk a little bit about tomorrow’s practicum placements,” says lecturer Gervasio Vachamuteco to 28 attentive students. They have been in this classroom in Nampula, Mozambique for 2 weeks, learning about the care and treatment of HIV, and the management of opportunistic infections and drug side effects. And now, as the late afternoon light streams into their classroom at the regional training center, it’s almost time for them to apply these new skills in the clinic. Tomorrow their course will transition to 2 weeks of onsite practical experience, caring for patients at hospitals and clinics in the Nampula area, under the supervision of experienced doctors.
Gondar University Hospital and I-TECH Celebrate Renovation
At Gondar University Hospital, in northern Ethiopia, I-TECH has coordinated the construction of a new tuberculosis ward that allows TB patients to be isolated and treated in a state-of-the-art facility. Designed and constructed in close collaboration with the University of Gondar and the regional and national agencies leading TB treatment strategy in Ethiopia, the new ward was officially inaugurated on 22 April.
