On 27 April, the Nyanza Leadership and Management Training Initiative was launched in Kisumu, Kenya. The Provincial Health Management Team (PHMT), the Family AIDS Care and Education Services (FACES) of Nyanza Province, and I-TECH have teamed up to implement this program. Nyanza, near Lake Victoria (see map), is the province in Kenya affected most by HIV and AIDS.

The goal of the Nyanza Leadership and Management Training Initiative is to improve health service delivery in Nyanza Province by increasing the skills and capacities of health program managers–including those on the FACES, provincial, and district health management teams–to effectively and efficiently manage human, fiscal, and capital resources as well as transfer management skills to facilities in their districts. The training program is tailored to the specific needs and realities of the health care system in Nyanza and is integrated into the existing annual workplan process.

The launch of the initiative includes a 5-day training that covers the first two modules of the training: 1) Leadership and Team Building and 2) Human Resource Management and Supervision. These modules were selected based on results of a thorough needs assessment.
