Curricula: Courses
The Curricula included in this section are comprehensive and lengthy. Most curricula are intended to be taught over the course of several days to a week. Use these curricula if you find that your mentees would like and need a thorough overview of a topic.
Planning such a lengthy training session can be challenging. You may wish to obtain I-TECH's Training Toolkit to assist you in the planning and implementing process. The Toolkit can be obtained through the I-TECH website, www.go2itech.org.

Preventing Mother to Child Transmission
This nine-session course is a comprehensive introduction to preventing mother to child transmission (PMTCT). The course may be taught over the course of 4 or 5 days, and is presented in a generic format that will allow the presenter to adapt the materials to be country-specific. Topics include a broad overview of HIV/AIDS, PMTCT, routine counselling and testing, the specifics of PMTCT prophylaxis, infant feeding, follow-up care, and recordkeeping.
HIV Basics for Nurses
HIV Basics for Nurses is an introduction to HIV designed for nurses who have little or no knowledge of HIV. In addition to introducing HIV/AIDS, the sessions cover antiretroviral therapy, infection control practices, and management and palliative care. The course emphasizes the role of nurses in HIV care, expanding the typical role of nurses in order to maximize their potential. The course consists of 10 sessions, and may be taught over 3-4 days. The curriculum is presented in a generic format that will allow country-specific adaptation.
Opportunistic Infections
This course is a comprehensive six day course designed to train physicians who have limited experience working with patients with opportunistic pathogens and infections. The course presents the basics of opportunistic infections so they can care for and treat HIV-positive patients. Many clinical images are included in this course to allow participants to see examples of opportunistic infections. The course is seven sessions long and may be adapted to be country-specific.
Training of Trainers
This five day curriculum is designed to train new trainers in course presentation skills. The aim of the workshop is to discuss adult learning principles and training methods and provide an opportunity for practicing training. The course is designed for healthcare providers, and the emphasis of the training is on HIV care and ART.
Infection Control
The infection control course includes five sessions on infection control. Sessions include infection control overview as it applies to TB as well as HIV and other blood-borne pathogens, hand hygiene, clean, aseptic and sterile techniques, and managing medical waste. The curriculum is presented in a generic format that will allow country-specific adaptation. It was originally adapted from an I-TECH training in India.
Nutrition Management with HIV/AIDS
This curriculum is a comprehensive training for health care workers about nutrition and HIV. It includes information about HIV/AIDS and food security, nutrition complications associated with HIV/AIDS infant feeding, nutrition and medications, food and water safety, and integrating nutrition assessment into care and treatment. This course was adapted from an I-TECH training in Namibia.
On-Site Clinical Training
The On-Site Clinical Training course is a five-day training that was designed for "in-service tutors" (nurse-trainers who conduct in-service training for healthcare workers in PMTCT and VCT) that were to conduct site visits to health facilities in their region to both assess transfer of learning and to provide on-site clinical teaching, motivation, and support. The course focuses on many skills that are used in clinical teaching. The report forms used in the course are specific to Namibia, but the course and forms could easily be adapted to other settings.
Antiretroviral Therapy for Nurses
The ART for Nurses course is a five-day comprehensive training that covers topics related to ART. It was originally developed for an ART course in Ethiopia for Nurses, but is presented here in a generic format so that it can be adapted to fit multiple audiences.
