Introduction to Clinical Mentoring

Welcome to the Clinical Mentoring Toolkit.

This toolkit is filled with resources to facilitate successful clinical mentoring in any setting.  You may wish to begin with About this Toolkit to get an idea of the toolkit's purpose and contents.

After reading about the toolkit a good place to start is Clinical Mentoring.  Within this section you will find the I-TECH Clinical Mentoring Position Piece, which will introduce you to I-TECH's perspective on clinical mentoring.  A companion PowerPoint presentation, Mentorship: An Overview, gives a good perspective on what mentorship entails.  Reading these two items will help you put the rest of the toolkit to good use.

Categories

There are six primary categories within this toolkit:

Each of the categories has several sub-categories that expound upon the topic.  For example, under Getting Started you will find Hiring Mentor & Site Preparation and Tips for Mentors.

The categories provide the information you need to implement a clinical mentoring program from start to finish, and will make the most sense if you read them in order.  However, Monitoring and Evaluation will apply throughout the process, so keep referring back to that section as you work through the other categories.

Downloadable Documents

Each of the sections contains downloadable documents.  Some take the form of handouts, others are forms that you may download, modify and use.  The modifiable documents are saved in Microsoft Word.  Handouts are presented in Portable Document Format (PDF).  A few of the documents are saved as Microsoft PowerPoint presentations.  For your convenience a copy of Adobe Reader has been included on this CD-ROM in the Software folder. Alternatively you can access the Adobe website at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html for a free download of the version of Adobe Reader most compatible with your computer.
